What is the role of sodium sulphide in flotation?

Sodium sulfide (Na2S) is a commonly used agent in the flotation of sulfide ore. Its main functions are as follows:

1. Sodium sulfide is the inhibitor of most sulfide minerals.

When used in large amounts, it inhibits most of the sulfide ore. It inhibits descending order of sulfide ore is roughly: galena, sphalerite, yellow copper ore, bornite, covellite, pyrite, chalcocite. Since molybdenum ore is naturally floatable, sodium sulfide cannot inhibit it. Using this, when flotation molybdenite is used, Na2S can be used to suppress other sulfide ore.

Second, the vulcanizing agent is sodium sulfide ferrous metal oxide ores

Non-ferrous metal oxides cannot be directly collected by xanthate. However, if sodium sulfide and non-ferrous metal oxidized ore are added before the yellow medicine flotation, a film of sulfide ore can be produced on the surface of the mineral, and the yellow medicine can be harvested. This action of sodium sulfide is called vulcanization, so it can be used as a vulcanizing agent for non-ferrous metal oxides.

After the action of white lead ore and sodium sulfide, the surface color changes from white to dark. After the action of malachite and sodium sulfide, the surface color changes from green to dark, indicating that after vulcanization, the sulfide surfaces of the two minerals are different from those of minerals.

3. Sodium sulphide is a drug for the separation of sulfide ore concentrates.

When the amount of sodium sulfide is large, the xanthate collector which adsorbs the surface of the mineral can be analyzed. Therefore, sodium sulfide can be used as a de-agent before separation of the concentrate. For example, before the separation of lead-zinc mixed concentrate or copper-lead mixed concentrate, the slurry can be concentrated, a large amount of sodium sulfide is added to remove the drug, and then washed, and fresh water is added again to adjust the slurry and then subjected to separation and flotation.

In addition to the above three main functions, since sodium sulfide can form insoluble sulfide precipitates with many metal ions, sodium sulfide also has the effect of eliminating some ions harmful to flotation in the slurry.
