Launch of Michelin Global Technology Center Upgrade Project

Recently, the Michelin Group embarked on a comprehensive upgrade of the Laduux technology center near the Clermont-Ferrand headquarters to increase Michelin's technological innovation and shorten the time to market for new products. As of 2017, 3,300 technical R&D personnel will be newly built in the Technical Center to house an ultra-modern complex. While consolidating and consolidating Michelin's global R&D team and all laboratory resources, the upgrade of this technology center will also further optimize the process and increase work efficiency.

The Michelin Global Technology Center's overall upgrade plan includes the renovation of existing buildings, the demolition of abandoned facilities, and the completion of the largest integrated R&D building in the Auvergne region of France. The building area will be 67,000 square meters, and it will accommodate 1,600 workstations at the same time. The R&D building is named as RDI Park (RDI means research, development and technology). The in-building system platform can be adapted to the needs of 20 staff members for different project research and development. Therefore, the technical center team can make full use of various new disciplines and knowledge. Conduct cross-functional cooperation. At the same time, the currently scattered research institutions will also be unified into the new comprehensive R&D building. This integration will facilitate the acceleration of process operations and promote the integration and development of technologies between different product lines and departments.

Today, 45 years after the establishment of the Michelin Technology Center, this comprehensive upgrade will provide the R&D team with the best working environment and living environment. In addition to the R&D work area, the RDI Park will have a series of humanized living facilities such as training facilities, libraries, restaurants, fitness centers, dry cleaners, bakeries, and ATMs. The Michelin Group has also specially designed a 300-meter promenade called "Exploration" to encourage more positive discussions and inspire new innovations. It is worth mentioning that this landmark complex is designed and constructed in full compliance with the environmental protection standards of the French High Environmental Quality Assessment System (HQE).

Research on the structure of the integrated R&D building was started in early 2011 and will take several months. The construction of the project in the first half of 2012 will take five years. The total investment of the project exceeds 100 million euros. The first phase of the project will be completed in 2014, and 600 R&D personnel will be able to move in. The second phase of the project will be completed by the end of 2016 and it will also accommodate 1,000 R&D personnel. By 2017, a brand new Michelin R&D complex will be formed in Latin America and build a high-level innovation and technology base for Michelin.
