KONGSBERG provides sound discipline research and mapping equipment for NERC's new polar research vessels
Recently, the Norwegian Kongsberg Maritime Company received a contract from the Cammell Laird Shipyard in the UK as a major supplier to provide sound discipline research and mapping equipment for the new Polar Research Ship of the British Natural Environment Research Council (NERC).
Upon completion, the new vessel will be named "RRS Sir David Attenborough" and will be operated by the British Antarctic Commission of Inquiry (BAS), operating primarily in the Antarctic and South Atlantic regions.
As part of the contract, Kongsberg will provide ice-protected multi-beam mapping systems and polar offshore scientific research platforms to meet UK scientific research needs. The KOX's equipment also includes an EM 122 deepwater multibeam system, an EM 712 medium deep multibeam system, a TOPAS PS 18 shallow profiler, an EA 640 scientific echo, and an EK 80 Bio-multi-frequency echo and a ME 70 bio-multibeam echo, an MS 70 bio-multibeam echo, an SH 94 Omni direction sensor, an SX 94 front-facing sensor and a K-Sync sync .
David Vaughan, president of the British Antarctic Survey, said that the ship will become a technologically advanced interdisciplinary platform for physics, biology, chemistry, oceanography, geography and climate. It is the largest and most advanced research ship in the UK and will help the UK maintain the Polar Research is at the forefront of the world.
It is reported that the ship has an investment of 140 million pounds and is currently being built at the Cammell Laird Shipyard in Liverpool, England. It is 125 meters long, 24 meters wide and draught about 7 meters. It is expected to be put into service before 2019.
