Dongfeng plans to assemble trucks at Russian Gill Truck Plant next year

Dongfeng Motor once imported a series of automobile manufacturing plants from the Soviet Union at the beginning of the founding of China and copied the Soviet trucks as prototypes of Chinese cars. Now, Chinese automakers have already begun returning to Russia to provide funds and technology for the revitalization of Russian truck brands.

According to the "Russian Times" report, China's automaker Dongfeng plans to begin assembling trucks at the ZIL (Gill brand truck series) plant as early as next year. This will be another step in rejuvenating Russia’s oldest truck manufacturer. The Gir brand trucks have had a history of producing trucks for nearly 90 years, and are more famous as Soviet leaders building luxury cars.

Dongfeng is interested in Russia's indigenous producers and is negotiating with potential partners, including manufacturers in the Moscow region. “Our first step is to carefully examine all possibilities. It takes two to three years to start assembling, but we hope to solve the problem as soon as possible.” A Dongfeng source told RBC Daily.

"The initial production in 2013 was 2,000 units," the source added.

China Dongfeng Corporation was established in 1969, formerly known as China's second automobile manufacturing plant. Its factories from design to factory equipment all mimicked the former Soviet Union's Shenyang First Automobile Manufacturing Plant which aided China. Shenyang First Automobile Factory is a complete product of the imitation of the Soviet Gill automobile factory. Therefore, it can be said that Dongfeng Company was originally a Chinese cottage factory of Gill Truck Company.

This move is likely to revive the output of Russian truck manufacturers, which was set by the Moscow government earlier this year. In May 2012, Moscow Mayor Sergei Sobyanin and the manager of the Savings Bank of the Russian Federation stated that they will look for partners to jointly run MosavtoZIL. In 2013, the plant will produce Renault and modern models.

After going through the idle period from May to September 2011, the Jill series trucks were re-started with the assistance of the Moscow government. This avoided the bankruptcy of the company and partially repaid the debt of the Jill family trucks with an estimated value of 483.9 million U.S. dollars.

At present, GAZ Group is the largest automobile manufacturer in Russia, accounting for 47.3% of the Russian market share. KAMAZ Group (Russian famous heavy truck manufacturer) and Jill series trucks occupy the second and third largest market share, respectively.
