I. Tailings sedimentation tank According to the topographical conditions and construction methods, the tailings sedimentation tank can be divided into three types.

1. Valley-type tailings sedimentation tank This tailings sedimentation tank is made up of closed river valleys. The advantage is that the dam body is short, the initial dam engineering volume is small, and it is easy to use the tailings dam during the production period. The disadvantage is that the water accumulation area is large, so the amount of flood flowing into the tailings sedimentation tank is large, which makes the drainage structure complicated.
2. River-type and slope-type tailings sedimentation tanks. The tailings sedimentation tanks constructed from river beaches or slopes are usually surrounded by three sides. The advantage is that the water accumulation area is small and the drainage structure is simple. The shortcoming is that the dam is built on three sides, the dam body is long, and the initial dam project is large. It is also inconvenient to use the tailings dam during production.
3. Flat-type tailings sedimentation tank This type of sedimentation tank is formed by four sides of the dam using a flat section. The advantage is that the water accumulation area is small and the drainage structure is simple. The shortcoming is that the dam is built on four sides, the dam body is long, the initial dam project is large, and the operation and management during production are inconvenient. Such tailings sedimentation tanks are usually used when there is a lack of suitable river valleys, river beaches, slopes, or when both types of tailings sedimentation tanks are not suitable.
Second, the initial dam of the tailings sedimentation tank The tailings dam usually includes two parts: the initial dam and the tailings accumulation dam. The former is the basic dam built with earth and stone before the tailings sedimentation tank is put into production. The latter is a dam built with tailings sand or clay on the basis of the initial dam after the tailings sedimentation tank is put into production. The role of the tailings dam is to make the tailings sedimentation tank form a certain volume, which is convenient for the tailings slurry to be stored therein.
The requirements for the initial dam vary depending on the size of the plant, the length of its useful life, the amount of water that needs to be returned, and the impact on downstream safety. Large-scale tailings sedimentation tanks with long service life, large return water and threats to downstream safety, should be built into a relatively strong initial dam. In general, earth dams are the most economical. Stone dams are used only when there is no suitable soil in the area or when the dam is required to be high. However, compared with the dam, its technical requirements are lower than that of the dam. This is because the tailings sedimentation tank stores the tailings slurry. The thickness and height of the tailings on the inner slope of the initial dam are gradually increased, thus enhancing the dam. Stability. When the tailings are in a natural valley, the initial dam should be built perpendicular to the valley.
