IIHS Research Report: The Worrying Face of Top SUV Headlights

The American Road Safety Insurance Association (IIHS) tested the headlamps of 21 small SUVs and the results were surprising. None of the models were able to reach a "good" level; only 4 were rated "acceptable", namely Ford Maverick, Hyundai Tucson, Mazda CX-3 and Honda CR-V. The other 17 SUVs were rated as "marginal" or "bad". According to IIHS, the Honda HR-VTM is the worst Honda 2016 HR-VTM among all tested vehicle headlights, while the Mazda CX-3 is the best.

In order to test the headlights of the SUV, IIHS engineers used special equipment to test the distance that can be projected by the headlights in five situations (straight, right-turn, left-turn, slow-turn, and slow-turn). The IIHS also evaluated the low-beam glare as well as some extra points for high-beam assist. There were 17 SUVs that produced "unacceptable glare", of which 3 of them could only reach an "acceptable" rating.

In all 21 SUVs, there are a total of 47 different headlamp combinations, including: LED lights, arc lamps (HID), and curve adaptive systems. Although equipped with stylish and more expensive lighting systems, the lighting of these small SUVs is even worse than the mid-sized SUVs tested earlier this year.

It is worth noting that even though it is a car with a higher light rating, consumers need to polish their eyes to ensure that they have bought the car. For example, Hyundai Tucson has only a limited edition of “acceptable” levels. In the regular edition, its performance is “bad”. And even if it is a relatively well-restricted limited edition, it can only achieve a "bad" rating when equipped with a curve adaptive system, because its glare is unacceptable.

In the next year, a car that wants to obtain a "top safety pick+" safety rating from IIHS must have at least an "acceptable" level of light.

The scores for each test vehicle are as follows:

"Acceptable" level: 2017 Ford Maverick, Honda CR-V, Hyundai Tucson, Mazda CX-3

"Edge" level: BMW X1, Mazda CX-5, Mitsubishi Outlander, Toyota RAV4, Volkswagen Tiguan

"Harsh" grades: Audi Q3, Buick Encore, Chevrolet Creo, Fiat 500X, Honda HR-V, Jeep Freeman, Jeep Liberty, Jeep Wrangler, 2017 Kia Chi running, Mitsubishi Outlander Sport, Nissan Rogue, Subaru Forester
