I have taken the lead in the preparation of mono-atomic platinum catalysts
The research team of Aerospace Catalysis and New Materials under the leadership of the Research Institute of Dalian Institute of Chemical Physics, Dalian Institute of Technology, China, on the basis of years of research on highly dispersed catalysts, collaborated with Liu Jingyue, a researcher at the institute, and Professor Li Wei from Tsinghua University to use iron oxide as a carrier to utilize iron oxide and platinum atoms. For the first time, a mono-atomic platinum catalyst with practical significance was prepared. Related papers have recently been published in the journal Nature and Chemistry.
The resource scarcity of precious metals determines its high price, but its unique physical and chemical properties determine that it cannot be replaced in many kinds of catalytic reactions. Therefore, how to improve the utilization efficiency of noble metal atoms has always been one of the core issues in catalyst preparation science, and platinum catalysts are the most widely used noble metal catalysts.
Zhang Tao's research group and partners observed by ultra-high resolution scanning transmission electron microscopy that on the catalysts they prepared, all platinum was monodispersed without any sub-nanometer or nano-aggregates present. Monoatomic platinum catalysts have very high catalytic efficiencies and their catalytic activity is 2-3 times that of conventional nanocatalysts. Professor Charles Pyden of the Pacific Northwest National Laboratory in the United States stated that whether individual atoms can act as active sites in heterogeneous catalysts is a matter that has been considered by the catalytic community. This study gives a positive answer.
Monoatomic catalysis is of great significance for the practical application of the catalyst. 50% of the world's annual platinum production is used in three-way converters for automotive exhaust gas purification systems. The fuel cell electrode catalysts, the selective hydrogenation of catalytic reforming in petrochemicals, and the synthesis of various fine chemicals rely heavily on highly efficient noble metal catalysts such as supported platinum and palladium. If the monoatomic catalyst can be used in the above catalytic reaction, the cost of the catalyst will be greatly reduced.
Zhang Tao emphasized that the preparation of monoatomic catalysts is an example of catalytic science from nanocatalysis to monoatomic catalysis. "This method can increase production efficiency and reduce costs."
