Telescopic sensors help increase the efficiency of chronic disease detection
Recently, a study published by the University of Glasgow in the United Kingdom stated that wireless health sensors made of high-stretch materials are beneficial to patients with chronic diseases such as diabetes. They can detect some key indicators, reduce the number of blood tests, and improve the daily care of chronic diseases.
Human sweat contains many substances, including blood sugar and urea, so monitoring the level of such substances in sweat can help doctors better diagnose and monitor chronic diseases, including diabetes, kidney disease and some cancers. However, many current wearable health devices do not meet the requirements for accuracy, and they are too bulky to affect patients' use.
The research team led by Glasgow University professor Lavender Dacia designed a new sensor to monitor sweat pH. The new sensor is made of a graphite-polyurethane synthetic material. It is not only light weight, but also has very good stretching properties. The length can be retracted up to 53%. It is suitable for patients wearing for a long time.
The sensor also uses near-field communication technology to wirelessly transmit monitoring data to smartphone applications, allowing healthcare personnel to monitor patient-related values in real time using mobile devices such as smartphones.
Dahia said that human sweat and blood contain many of the same physiological information. Detecting sweat can eliminate the need to penetrate the skin to collect blood samples for detection.
In the next step, the team will try to expand the performance of this sensor, make it a complete diagnostic system, and ultimately achieve the monitoring of blood glucose, ammonia and urea levels in sweat.
The relevant research results were published in the international academic journal Biosensors and Bioelectronics.
