South Sudan Installs Prepayment Meter

According to news, as part of the African Development Bank’s investment in South Sudan, South Sudan’s Juba will provide new customers with 20,000 prepaid energy meters.

The ADB-supported distribution system restoration and expansion project provided a total of US$26 million in loans to restore and expand the distribution network in Juba. The project includes laying 145 km of low-voltage 33 kV power lines and 370 km of medium-voltage power lines, installing 195 substations, and adding 20,000 new customers to the network.

“The low-level and inefficient distribution grids of existing power stations have seriously affected people’s living standards and hindered business development,” said Alex Rugamba, Director of Energy, Environment and Climate Change at the African Development Bank. “The project will help increase network efficiency. , increase the power access level in Juba."

Currently, there is only 1% in South Sudan and less than 10 million customers are connected to the grid, mostly in Juba and two other major cities, Malakal and Wau.

This is also the first donation project undertaken by South Sudan Electric Power Company. The staff will be trained in financial and project management and technical use.
