Recently, Rolls-Royce received a contract for the supply of MT30 marine gas turbines by three Daegu-class frigates of the South Korean Navy.
It is reported that these Daegu-class frigates will undertake various tasks including anti-submarine warfare, air defense operations, patrols, surveillance, search and rescue, special economic zone protection and transportation.
A total of eight ships were built in the plan, the first of which was built by Daewoo Shipbuilding & Marine Engineering Co., Ltd., and launched in June 2016 at Daewoo Shipbuilding Yupu Shipyard. The second Daegu class frigate will also be built on Daewoo, while the third and fourth Daegu class frigates will be built at Hyundai Heavy Industries (HHI) SNSD.
According to Rolls-Royce, the MT30 gas turbine for the second and third Daegu-class frigates will be delivered in the second half of 2018, and the MT30 gas turbine for the fourth Daegu-class frigate will be delivered very early in 2019.
The South Korean Navy's Daegu class frigate was the world's first frigate to use a single MT30 gas turbine in a compact frigate. It was also the first time that Rolls-Royce's MT30 gas turbine was used outside the UK and US markets.
The MT30 gas turbine has successfully installed the first Daegu class frigate and has successfully supported the operation of the Korean Daegu class frigate propulsion system. Rolls-Royce believes that the MT30 gas turbine has already provided the power to meet the full-speed requirements of the Daegu class frigate.
The MT30 gas turbine is derived from Rolls-Royce's Trent Aero Engine technology and has a cumulative operating experience of 45 million hours and exceptional reliability.
After the completion of the experiment, the MT30 gas turbine will be shipped to South Korea, and will be integrated with the steel casing that also includes the air intake, exhaust and peripheral equipment before Hyundai Heavy Industries Engine and Machinery will be installed on the frigate.
Rolls-Royce's MT30 gas turbine has been fitted with the US Navy's free-class Littoral Combat Ship, which is already in service, and has been used as the power of the Jumwal-class destroyer. The MT30 gas turbine has been selected as the powerhouse for the Royal Navy's Type 26 global warship and is providing power to the Royal Navy's new aircraft carrier.
On the aircraft carrier Queen Elizabeth, two MT30 gas turbine alternators are now generating electricity at full capacity. Recently, the Italian Navy has selected the MT30 gas turbine for its newly built helicopter landing ship.
