On December 7th, Gansu Province Key Laboratory of Cold and Arid Regions Stress Physiology and Ecology was established on the Cold and Arid Regions Environmental and Engineering Research Institute of the Chinese Academy of Sciences in Lanzhou.

Li Xinrong, director of the laboratory, said that Gansu Province is the main distribution area of ​​extreme conditions in western China, but extreme habitats also bred unique resilience biological resources. The laboratory will carry out the physiological response mechanism of the organisms to environmental stress in the arid regions of the cold region, the study of the extreme environmental ecological patterns and processes, and the maintenance mechanism of biodiversity, providing the use of biological resources, crop breeding and ecological restoration and reconstruction in cold and arid regions. Li Wenqing, director of the Science and Technology Department of Gansu Province, pointed out that high-level basic research and applied basic research bases represented by key laboratories play an important supporting role in the economic and social development of Gansu Province.
